An Education Innovator Since 1831
Building upon the traditions of St. 弗朗西斯大学 and 韦斯特布鲁克大学, the University of New England has grown and evolved for more than a century. Now encompassing three campuses, more than 40 undergraduate majors, six Centers of Excellence in 研究, a College of Osteopathic Medicine, a药学院, and Northern New England's only College of 口腔医学, our institution is poised for progress.
UNE's Pathway of Growth and Partnership
的 University of New England has a rich and varied history, reflecting the determination, 创造力, and resourcefulness of its leaders, and of the history of 缅因州 and New England.
It is a wonderful story beginning with Franciscan monks on the banks of the Saco River in 1939 who formed the College Seraphique, a high school and junior college to educate boys of Quebecois decent. In 1952, the institution became a four-year liberal arts college called St. 弗朗西斯大学. As the College struggled financially in the late ‘70’s, necessity and opportunity met in the form of the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. 的 College of Osteopathic Medicine was opened on the campus of St. Francis and the two became the University of New England in 1978.
In 1996, there came another opportunity for growth for UNE. 韦斯特布鲁克大学, founded in 1831 as Westbrook Seminary, 位于波特兰, was experiencing similar financial and enrollment difficulties as St. Francis had in the ’70s. 韦斯特布鲁克大学 merged with UNE, bringing with it a long history and dedicated alumni body.
UNE has grown to become 缅因州's largest private university, and our story continues with every graduating class. With three distinctive campuses in Biddeford and Portland, 缅因州, and 丹吉尔、摩洛哥, 6个唯一的 缅因大学 — the College of 艺术与科学, College of Osteopathic Medicine, 韦斯特布鲁克大学 of 健康的职业, College of 口腔医学, 商学院, and the College of Graduate and Professional Studies — the next chapter will certainly be an interesting one.
